SOVIET AIRMAIL PACIFIC OCEAN ROUTE: ALEXANDROVSK SAKHALIN ISLAND - NIKOLAYEVSK
Yzhno-Sakhalinsk 1951 (July) - Domestic Registered Airmail to Moscow, bearing 1949 2r green “Chmelnitsky Order” paying the correct rate (tariff of 16 September 1948), tied by the very scarce YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK OBLAST cds (∅ 30mm), special box for airmail registration handstamp (43x20mm) alongside. Control mark on reverse and arrival Moscow receiver 19 July 1951. Very Fine.
The cover took the Alexandrovsk (Sakhalin) – Nikolayevsk – Komsomolsk – Khabarovsk on the Far East air line following the Pacific coast (opened to Sakhalin in 1933), then the Khabarovsk – Irkutsk Trans-Siberian line westward to Moscow.

Note: very scarce origin, Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk was founded in South Sakhalin island by Russian convicts in 1882 (1882-1905: Vladimirovka. 1905-1945: Toyohara). After being captured by the Soviet during WWII, it was granted town status in 1946.
