RSFSR & SOVIET UNION MIXED FRANKING: AUGUST 1923 REGISTERED TO CZECHOSLOVAKIA
Moscow 1923 (21 August) – International Registered envelope sent to a politician in Praha, Czechoslovakia, bearing the complete newly released set “All Russia Agricultural & Industry Moscow Exhibit” imperforate – FIRST ISSUE OF THE USSR – in combination with R.S.F.S.R 10r Definitive. The franking 25 roubles is underpaying the 30R rate put in effect the day before (the clerk possibly counted with the previous rate of 20R valid from 8 May until 19 August 1923). All stamps are used at face value. No arrival postmark. Very Fine.
A rare commercial cover, with a very early usage of the first stamps of the CCCP (THIRD DAY OF USE) and one of less than 20 covers known with MIXED FRANKING R.S.F.S.R and the first issue of the Soviet Union.
The RSFSR Postal department kept its postal sovereignty on the Soviet territory on behalf of the USSR until 30 November 1923. Therefore between 19 August (date of issue of the first Soviet Union set) and 30 November 1923, stamps from both political entities could be used together.
