RUSSIA 1865 & 1875 ISSUES MIXED FRANKING: 3RD WEIGHT STEP FROM SMALL SIBERIAN TOWN, EARLIEST MAIL RECORDED
Kurgan Siberia, Tobolsk province 1879 (5 February) - Domestic Registered envelope sent to Minsk, with a superb combination of the 1865 1k (on unwatermarked paper) and 1875 8, 10k and 20k paying the correct 39 kopek registered third weight step rate (tariff of 19 June 1875 : 8 kopek for each lot + registration 10 kopek + receipt 5 kopek). Adhesives struck by the very rare KURGAN first postmark (∅ 26 mm, Robinson 699.01). Departure on 6 February and arrival receiver MINSK 21 February. Extremely Fine and attractive Four Colour Franking.

Note: harsh winter conditions prevented this mail to reach its western destination faster, and it took 15 days to gap the 2,400 km distance to Minsk. Kurgan was founded in 1633, acquired town status in 1782. Altough it had a pochtovaya kontora status in 1830, no earlier postmarks or mail have been ever been recorded before the February 1879 cover presented here. Kurgan population in 1869: 5,172
